Animal feeds processing plant
Summary
Homa Bay County plans to establish a 9-ton-per-hour animal feeds processing plant to provide quality and affordable feeds to farmers. Despite having abundant raw materials like omena, soya beans, cassava, rice bran, and maize, the county lacks a processing plant, forcing agro-vets to source feeds externally. A feasibility study confirmed the viability of the project, which aims to meet the growing demand for layers mash, chick mash, dairy meal, and fish meal, driven by increased poultry and fish farming. With no existing feeds plant in Western Kenya, competition will mainly come from large-scale producers outside the region and local cooperative societies that produce feeds for their own use. The project requires a USD 5,000,000 investment for infrastructure, acquisition, installation, and operationalization of the plant. By leveraging locally available raw materials, the factory will reduce costs, improve feed quality, and support farmers. The plant is expected to create approximately 100 direct jobs and over 25,000 indirect employment opportunities. It will also enhance farmers' productivity by ensuring consistent feed supply, thereby improving livelihoods and boosting the county’s agricultural economy.
