Aquaculture Development
Summary
"The aquaculture project in Homa Bay County aims to enhance farmed fish production and technology transfer in cage fish farming. With 1,651 square kilometres of Lake Victoria waters and a favourable climate, the county is well-suited for tilapia and catfish farming. Fish by-products like fish oil and bones will also be utilized for animal feeds and organic fertilizers. Implementation will take place in Suba North, Suba South, Homa Bay, and Rachuonyo sub-counties to maximize production. The market for fish and fish products is expanding due to lifestyle changes and increased disposable income. Homa Bay produced 52,375, 53,347, and 50,053 metric tons of fish in 2020, 2021, and 2022, respectively, with an average annual market value of $70 million. While private farms and small-scale fish farmers present competition, the county holds the largest share of Lake Victoria's Kenyan waters, offering vast untapped potential for expansion. The project seeks $10 million for establishing fish cages, producing fingerlings, developing aqua parks, training farmers, and marketing. Beyond financial gains, it will create jobs, support economic growth, and improve food security. With a focus on sustainability and global market standards, the investment offers opportunities for diversification, including fish feed processing, making it both a profitable and socially responsible venture."
