Summary

Kenya is reviving its cotton industry, with production reaching 37,000 metric tons in 2022 and domestic consumption at 10,000 metric tons. Homa Bay County is expanding cotton farming from 20,000 acres to an additional 60,000 acres this year, with a potential of 200,000 acres. Government support includes distributing Bt cotton seeds and improving agricultural services to boost yields from 700 kg to 1,200 kg per hectare, ensuring sufficient supply for a cotton ginning factory. The project will benefit over 90,000 households by creating jobs and improving rural livelihoods. The Riwa Special Economic Zone offers opportunities for cotton processing, including ginning, oil extraction, spinning, and garment manufacturing. Despite competition from second-hand clothing, synthetic fabrics, and alternative crops like maize, government incentives and sustainable farming practices aim to boost production and economic growth. Homa Bay County seeks a USD 7.45 million investment for land, infrastructure, equipment, and research. Using modern techniques like drip irrigation and precision agriculture, expected yields of 1,200 kg per acre on 30,000 acres will produce 72,000,000 kg annually, benefiting 4,023 registered cotton farmer organizations. The project also promotes women’s and youth empowerment through training and skill development.
