Summary

The $193 million climate-resilient water and sanitation project in Homa Bay aims to integrate climate adaptation into infrastructure planning and operations. Covering Homa Bay, Oyugis, Kendu Bay, Ndhiwa, and Mbita, it will enhance water access, affordability, and sustainability through last-mile connectivity, advanced technology, and carbon-neutral systems. Currently, Homa Bay produces 8,600m³/day against a demand of 25,000m³/day, expected to rise to 42,000m³/day by 2034. Sanitation coverage is only 11%, with Homa Bay Municipality’s sewerage system covering just 14%. This project will establish resource recovery plants to improve sanitation and align with SDG 6 for universal water access. As the only licensed provider, HOMAWASCO leads the project, ensuring high investment returns from service revenues while reducing Non-Revenue Water (NRW) and improving public health. The initiative will empower local communities, boost economic development, and promote environmental conservation through sustainable water supply solutions.
