The proposed Kithino Multipurpose dam project is located on Kithinu River in Tharaka-Nithi County of central Kenya, a distance of about 190 kilometres from Nairobi City. The proposed project is to supply 54,000 m3/day of water to irrigate an initial 8,750 acres and supply current domestic water needs of at least 66,500 people in Imenti South, Tharaka South and Tharaka North Sub-Counties. The project scope includes development of: dam of 44Mm3 storage capacity; 25,000m3/d WTP, transmission and distribution pipelines including last mile connectivity, storage reservoirs equivalent to 20% of daily water demand; irrigation conveyance pipeline, mainline, branch lines, feeder lines, BPTs and fittings sufficient cover the initial, and ultimate command areas; 1MW capacity hydropower plant and distribution to the WTP. The project shall provide training and management support services for non-revenue water (NRW) management and structure a value chain market system and producer organization.
