Leather Processing Plant
Summary
The Leather Processing Plant Project in Homa Bay County aims to leverage Kenya’s third-largest livestock herd to boost leather production, which currently accounts for only 3.5% of Africa’s output. By utilizing animal hides from slaughterhouses, the plant will enhance the meat industry’s value chain while reducing waste. The facility will process one metric ton of raw hides into 200 kg of finished leather, producing high-demand products like footwear, belts, and automotive interiors. Kenya faces a 35 million-pair footwear deficit, with annual demand at 48 million pairs but supply at only 10 million pairs. With no leather processing plant in western Kenya, the project has a unique market opportunity, targeting local consumers, neighboring counties, and global markets in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. The global leather industry is valued at over $150 billion, nearly doubling in the last decade. The project requires $170,000 for land, construction, machinery, and operational setup, with a one-year timeline for full implementation. The plant will create 100 direct jobs and over 2,000 indirect employment opportunities, supporting local farmers and slaughterhouses. However, with 60% of raw materials ending up as solid and liquid waste, the project will implement proper waste disposal systems to handle hazardous chemicals like chromium. By addressing environmental concerns and capitalizing on untapped industry potential, this initiative offers strong financial returns while promoting economic and industrial growth in Homa Bay County.
