Pasture Production
Summary
Kitui County, located in Kenya’s Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASAL) region, has significant potential for livestock production but faces recurring feed shortages due to frequent droughts. To address this, the County proposes the establishment of a large-scale pasture production system utilizing both rain-fed and irrigated techniques to ensure year-round availability of high-quality feed. The project will focus on drought-resistant pasture varieties, silage and hay production, and feedlot support services. The total investment requirement is USD 17,000, targeting land preparation, irrigation infrastructure, feed processing equipment, and livestock support facilities. This initiative will enhance livestock health, increase productivity, strengthen the livestock value chain, and improve local livelihoods.
