Poultry Hatchery
Summary
Kitui County is one of Kenya’s leading poultry regions, with over 1.65 million chickens and 90% of rural households engaged in poultry farming as a key livelihood activity (KNBS 2023, IFNA Survey 2021). Despite the sector’s potential, farmers face persistent challenges accessing high-quality chicks, often depending on distant suppliers from Nairobi, Kiambu, Nakuru, and Nyeri—leading to delays and higher costs. To address this gap, a modern poultry hatchery is proposed in Kitui Rural Sub-County at Kanyonyoo, strategically located along the Thika–Garissa Road. The hatchery will provide high-quality chicks (layers, broilers, and improved kienyeji breeds), supported by superior breeding stock and robust biosafety measures. Farmers will also receive technical support in chick rearing and poultry management, while the hatchery will enhance supply chain efficiency, reduce costs, and increase poultry productivity across Kitui, Machakos, Embu, and Garissa counties. The total investment requirement is USD 80,000, covering infrastructure development, modern incubators, stock acquisition, training, and marketing.
