Globalisation and fast growing opportunities for trade and commerce has made the maritime sector a key player in economic developments. The increasing demand for effective maritime services by the government, multinational organisations, local industries and individuals has overwhelmed the available seaports and hence the need for creating inland ports. In Kenya, Mombasa Port has a congestion problem as it is one of the major seaports in East Africa that is used by the East and Central Africa nations. By setting up a world class logistics hub in Voi, Mombasa Port will be relieved of some major workloads and congestion and thus facilitate the movement of goods from the port. A logistics hubin Voi will tap into the potential market for containers destined to northern Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi through the Taveta border and beyond. This will be made possible by the SGR that passes through TaitaTaveta County and the Voi – Taveta - Holili highway which is nearing completion. Also, Voi falls within the special economic zones therefore trade will be effective.
